Tamworth Regional Council bulky household waste collection allows Waste No More crews to go on 'treasure hunt' to collect and recycle tossed goods

Tamworth Regional Council statistics show more than 270 tonnes of bulky waste was picked up from out the front of local homes across the region.

That doesn't include e-waste or the amount of metal that was out for collection, as totals are still being tallied.

Council anticipated the load would be large, as people cleared out their homes for Christmas.

It created a "treasure hunt" for Tamworth's Waste No More recycling service, as the team popped around to check out people's piles, picking up some tossed treasures and giving them a second life.

Waste No More's Gavin Moffat told the Leader it's not a game though, with the goods collected helping keep people with disabilities in work.

"It all goes into keeping to a lot of the Challenge folks employed and also stops things going into landfill when it doesn't need to," he said.

Mr Moffat said there seemed to be a lot of barbecues, lawnmowers and pushbikes on the curb this time around.

"It looked like there was a lot of out with the old and in with the new," he said.

Locals can check out what's on offer at Waste No More by visiting the store on Fridays and Saturdays.

It is understood council rangers are out patrolling the streets this week to make sure items rejected from the curb-side clean-up are taken care of, and not dumped or ignored.
