A ROAD has been cordoned off in South Tamworth after a sinkhole opened up on Wednesday afternoon.

Tamworth Regional Council is investigating after a local discovered a basketball-sized hole in the roadway at the intersection of Holland Street and Wilburtree Street, which transcends into Hillvue Road.
Authorities are checking to see whether the foundations of the road have also given way.
As a precaution, council has cordoned off the area.

"Council staff are investigating, the area is being managed under traffic control," a spokesperson for council said.
"Please avoid the area if possible. Please drive with care."
The Leader understands a local resident alerted authorities after discovering the hole on Wednesday.
It's understood more investigations will be carried out on the roadway on Thursday.
Motorists are urged to drive with care.
"More detail will be advised, once investigations have been completed," the council spokesperson said.
