"This is great news for baseball in Tamworth," he said.
"It is a sport that flies under the radar in this region, but usually on the June long weekend, Tamworth plays host to one of the biggest baseball carnivals in the southern hemisphere. It attracts dozens of teams from around Australia.
"The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has broken a run of 52 years of Tamworth's winter baseball carnivals.
"But with this grant to help support younger players, clubs like the Cougars can keep the interest and skills levels on the up and up."
Craig Lee, a Cougars member and president of Tamworth Baseball Incorporated, said missing out on the carnival this year was a blow to the sport.
"This is a carnival that brings an estimated 2,500 players and supporters from far and wide and is the major fundraiser for the sport in the city," he said.
"So a local sport grant of $5,000 like this one is a great boost for the club and to help us attract and support young players.
"This grant will assist us with the further development of players and coaches in the club, buying new and additional training equipment and assist with reducing over operating costs for all."
