A MAN has had a costly encounter with police after he was slapped with a $1000 fine and ordered to front court.

The 27-year-old was stopped by Oxley police who were patrolling George Street in Quirindi about 5pm on Thursday.
Officers said the man did not have an acceptable reason for being away from home.
He was subsequently searched and police allege they found cannabis and other drug paraphernalia on him.

He was issued a notice to front court on drug possession charges. Police checks also revealed the man had been given several warnings for non-essential travel in COVID-19.
He was then slapped with a $1000 penalty infringement notice and also given a move-on direction.
Police then spotted the man in the area about 90 minutes later and confirmed he was given another warning and official move-on direction.
