Gunnedah FC will enter the top flight buoyed by their best preseason player numbers in years, skipper Matt Williams has said.

Williams is confident last season's first-grade premiers will not be overawed by the elevation to the top tier.

"It looks really promising so far," he said. "It's the best preseason numbers I've seen in five or four years. There's quite a few new young faces, a few returning that have had a year or two off."
Williams said the strong turnout was the result of the club's first- and reserve-grade premiership wins in 2019, as well as the club's promotion.
"We're definitely strong enough for two competitive teams ... And potentially, if we get a few more [players], we might think about a third team."

Williams said Gunnedah FC's committee had delivered on the blueprint they had for the club.
"It is exciting," he said, adding that he believed the club would be "quite competitive" in the top flight.
Gunnedah FC was promoted as part of the Premier League overhaul. That overhaul was subsequently scuppered when five Armidale clubs withdrew from Northern Inland Football.
NIF is yet to announce what the new competition structure will be, or whether the old structure will be reinstated.
