When reports of the great toilet paper shortage started coming through, we all thought it was a joke. Well at least I did. Because why would people be rushing out to buy up toilet paper to the point where the shelves became empty. It just didn't make any sense.
But it wasn't a joke. And it wasn't long before the shortage hit closer to home. Supermarket shelves across the region devoid of toilet paper.
I have no doubt those images of a truck carrying a load of toilet paper going up in flames would have sent shivers down the spine of many. While a NSW bidet retailer has been inundated with calls from fearful customers.
Then on Thursday, there was a new high (or low depending on your interpretation) when a man is alleged to have assaulted staff at a Tamworth department store over the unavailability of a certain item.
Obviously I can't say too much more about this as it's before the courts, but seriously!
I read an article during the week that put this mass hysteria down to the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). And really for no good reason.
Your neighbour puts eight packs of toilet paper in their trolley - and you're worried you're going to miss out (on what is not clear) - so you put eight packs of toilet paper in your trolley too. (But not at Woolies or Coles where there is a four pack limit)
We're pack animals at heart, so I suppose this makes sense. You essentially want what everyone else has.
But where does that leave the rest of us? The people who have not yet succumbed to the FOMO and stocked up during the week - preferring instead to leave the shopping until the weekend.
I guess I will find out.
On another note, it's International Women's Day today.
A day to acknowledge the women who have forged a path for the rest of us.
On Friday, I was lucky enough to share a room with some of those women from our own backyard. (See photos here)
The luncheon - put on for another year by JobLink Plus - a celebration of the achievements of so many in our own community.
I emerged inspired and reassured for the future.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Yours in search of loo paper.
