Regional Queenslanders have been in Annastacia Palaszczuk's ear about the Bradfield scheme, a plan from the 1930s to redirect water from the country's north inland.

She told a gathering of business and industry leaders in Brisbane on Wednesday she was open to a conversation with Prime Minister Scott Morrison on the issue.

Ms Palaszczuk said she didn't believe the scale of the initial scheme could work in Queensland today, but that the viability of a smaller version and potential environmental impacts should be explored.

"Perhaps we need to work with the federal government to see if we can do any planning together, for example, when it comes to a smaller version of the Bradfield scheme," she said.

"I've had people talk to me about it in the regions, and I'm more than happy to have a conversation with the Prime Minister."

The Bradfield scheme has been bandied around among politicians for years.

Former Queensland Labor premier Peter Beattie said in 2007 he wanted to revive the idea, followed by federal MP Bob Katter the following year.

In February, the NSW Nationals said they had put $25 million towards investigating it as an option, while former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce and One Nation senator Pauline Hanson have also thrown their support behind it.

Ms Palaszczuk said she is currently monitoring 14 communities that could run out of water, as 66 per cent of the state grapples with drought.

In September, her government announced emergency water funding to cover the cost of trucking in drinking water for drought and bushfire-ravaged Stanthorpe residents until the end of next year.

About 35 truckloads of water, or 1.6 million litres, is being carted from Connolly Dam to Storm King Dam every day at a cost of $800,000 a month.
