"A general misconception among the public is that the only way to get a good paying job is to go to university, but that is not the case," said a spokesperson from HVTC North West.

"A recent report by the Skilling Australia Foundation found that that Vocational Education and Training (VET) graduates are often better off than their university counterparts, particularly when it comes to employability and financial gain."

As an apprentice or trainee, you get to earn a wage while you study, with the added benefit of gaining relevant practical experience in your chosen field.

"Upon completion you have a good chance of securing a permanent job with your employer," the spokesperson said. "Approximately 82 percent of VET apprentices and trainees secure full-time employment after training, compared to just 69 percent for university graduates."

Another misconception about VET is that it only relates to traditional trade roles like plumbing or auto mechanics, but VET qualifications can lead you to some of the country's highest paying jobs, such as management roles in mining and engineering, according to HVTC.
