Players from as far away as Yamba, North Albury and Gulgong battled it out on day one of the three-day competition.
South Tamworth Bowling Club chief executive officer (CEO) Owen Walker said the event was "all about pride and prestige".
"All up I think there's about 200 bowlers playing here this weekend and about the same in spectators," Walker told the Leader.
"Each club here has entered three teams of four players.
"There's seven grades in the pennants and number three is a pretty high grade.
"What makes this event so special is that are 12 players in every team and while bowls can be an individual sport at times, this is truly a team event."

The event marks the first of several high-profile bowls competitions South Tamworth will host this year.
"We are hosting this event, the men's champion of club champions singles and pairs tournaments in October, and the ladies state championships in September," Walker said.
"All of them are really big events with lots of competitors, which is great for our club."
Walker said this weekend's competition would culminate with a final on Sunday afternoon.
"The final will kick off at about 1pm on Sunday afternoon and I would encourage everyone to come down and take a look," he said.
"It should be a great event."
