NEW England will keep its Labor neighbour to the south of the region with Joel Fitzgibbon staving-off an electoral challenge from One Nation and The Nationals in Hunter.

Mr Fitzgibbon has held the seat, which includes the shire of Muswellbrook, since 1996 but it was a closely run race in 2019.
The Labor MP copped a 13 per cent negative swing with votes flowing to One Nation and Clive Palmer's United Australia Party.

The incumbent was able to win the seat with just 38 per cent of primary vote, but he gained a 53 per cent majority in the two-party preferred vote.
One Nation's candidate Stuart Bonds received 21 per cent of the primary vote in the electorate just behind The Nationals' Josh Angus who received 23 per cent of number one picks.
