IT IS hoped a recent funding announcement will help bolster Tamworth's claim as a major freight hub for the North West.
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson announced the state government had pledged $1.6 million to upgrade Bowlers Lane between the Oxley Highway and Wallamore Road, in a jointly funded project with Tamworth Regional Council.
“This is great news for the growing industrial area in the Glen Artney estate and also for the proposed regional freight intermodal," Mr Anderson said.
It is understood about 5400 vehicles use the road every year and deputy mayor Phil Betts said it would improve heavy traffic efficiency for the region.
“Once Bowlers Lane is upgraded it will be able to be gazetted as a route for Higher Mass Limits (HML) B-Doubles,” Cr Betts said.
The project design is expected to be completed by June this year.
Construction works will be finished by mid-2020.
