It’s been likened to a hole-in-one in golf or a 300 in ten pin bowling and the Gunnedah Sporting Clays club call it the Perazzi Clean Break Challenge.
The prize is a MX 12 shotgun worth $12,000. All someone has to do is shoot a perfect 101 at the Gumtree Championships.
Some have gone close.
There’s been 97s, 98s and one shooter hit 75 straight targets before stumbling.
Two-time winner of the event and former world champion Damien Birgan has shot a 99.
So, is the perfect day unlikely? Yes. Impossible? No, says Gunnedah Sporting Clays publicity officer Scott Kelly.
“It’s doable but it’s like a hole-in-one,”
“It’s not common but it could happen.”
The Gumtree Championships aren’t just for the highest level of shooter.
Kelly said kids from the age of 12 right up to veterans in their 80s will turn out for the championships.
“Gumtree caters for all,” he said.
Gumtree caters for all. We have the ones that aren’t very experienced at shooting against near world champions. It’s a unique shoot for that.”

“We have the ones that aren’t very experienced at shooting against near world champions. It’s a unique shoot for that.”
The committee is expecting anywhere between 250-300 shooters to attend over the long weekend.
The championships bring in those sorts of numbers each year and is popular for a number of reasons, Kelly said.
“They travel from all around Australia [to attend]. We have a lot of national shooters and shooters that have shot for Australia coming,” Kellyt said.
“It’s the whole package [that attracts people].
“They get to camp, they get to catch up with friends, they get to shoot targets and enjoy the whole atmosphere of the weekend.
“It’s been going for so many years and they make it a once a year thing where they all meet up.”
Kelly said there was another incentive.
“We’re offering almost $30,000 in prizes which also helps,” he said.
The championships will be held on Saturday and Sunday at the Bulga Road range.
A canteen will be run and spectators are also welcome to check it all out.
