In a match played at Armidale Sportsground, the New England team proved too strong for Tamworth.
Tamworth won the toss and batted on a tough wicket and longish outfield.
Captain Chriss Crowell and Tom Kellett got the Tamworth team off to a steady start, both retiring after 35 balls, then Steve Massey blasted his way to 35 runs off 25 balls. Peter Boyd also retired after 35 balls. They then lost seven wickets for 25 runs to finish on 149.
New England’s top three all retired with Eric Higgins (22) and Craig Stoddart (23) kicking things off before Bruce Coppick scored 35 runs. A steady stream of runs got the New England team home. Scott Hobden was the pick of the Tamworth bowlers with 2-23 off five overs.
Mick Watkins bamboozled the tail with his loopy left arm bowling. It was a good hit out for everyone before the state championships. Training will continue this week before, on October 7, Tamworth play Quirindi at Riverside No. 1 in the first northern conference match for the season.
