It’s not just the spectators that will be descending from far and wide for the Barraba Jockey Club’s annual Barraba Cup meeting on Saturday.
Griffith trainer Russell Morgan will saddle up two runners including Cooee March in the feature $12,500 Barraba & District Cattle Breeders Barraba Cup (1400m).
The first-time Barraba visitor will also start Lighthorse in the Hart Rural Agencies & GW Bucknell Memorial Maiden Plate.
“He came on Wednesday and he’s here until Monday, then he’s going to Roma,” jockey club president Leon Cummins said.
The club’s only meeting of the year, Cummins said it is a great chance for the local community to come together.
“It’s big thing for the community,” he said adding that “everything is booked out”.
“People come here every year for it.”
He said the track is looking the best for a long time and is expecting a good day’s racing.
“We’re pretty happy with the fields. The Cup will be a good race,” he said.
Moree trainer Peter Sinclair has Free Billy and Baroque Girl while the Mark Mason-trainer Skyscraper has been placed four of his last five starts.
Part-owned by ex-Barraba local Kevin Cummins, the gelding is coming off a last start third at Tamworth (September 11) after finishing third in the Moree Cup and placing fourth at Warwick Farm.
Racing gets underway at 1.35pm.
