THE heavens have opened up over the weekend with a much-needed downpour forecasted for Tamworth.
The city hasn’t seen more than 25mm in a day since October 2017, and farmers rejoiced at the Bureau of Meteorology announcement that at least that much was expected on Saturday.
By 2pm on Sunday, Tamworth had received at least 13mm with more expected throughout the afternoon and evening.
Bureau of Meteorology state manager Ann Farrell released a statement on Friday telling residents to expect significant rainfall.
“We’re monitoring a rainfall bearing system associated with an upper and surface trough moving from the west into Queensland and NSW,” she said.
“We’ll see that rain after it forms tonight gradually build up and some places will see steady rain, and there will be some moderate falls in places associated with that.

“Before eventually it starts clearing away with some clearing showers and the like on Sunday.”
The best of the rainfall was expected to fall in our region, from Moree and Walgett down to Tamworth.
One of the reasons the rain is interesting is because the state hasn’t seen any like it for a long time Ms Farrell said.
“Clearly with the drought conditions we’ve had there’s a lot of rainfall deficiencies across the state,” she said.
“Places like Tamworth haven’t seen more than 25mm in a day since October last year.”
