Last month, Tamworth Regional Council voted in favour of chipping-in $20,000 to the Wests Tigers-Newcastle Knights round seven clash, organised by Wests Leagues Club, five months after it was announced the match was coming to town.
The sponsorship secured Destination Tamworth signage on the sidelines and 30 double passes to the games.

Director of business and community John Sommerlad said, at the time, it was a worthwhile investment because it would put the city in front of rugby league’s “national audience”.
When councillors approved the sponsorship spend in March, it hadn’t been decided who would receive the game tickets.
Council confirmed to The Leader it would give away all 30 double passes to the game it received as part of the deal.
According to a council spokesperson, “no value was assigned in the sponsorship proposal but they are assigned seats in a temporary grandstand”.
“Based on General Admission pricing, the value would be $23 per ticket or $46 per double.”
Councillors and managers, including executive managers, are ineligible to enter the giveaway competition which was launched on Tuesday.
In an online poll conducted by The Leader, more than 60 per cent of respondents voted against council sponsoring the game.
However, more than 20 per cent of voters said there was a lot to be gained from the event and 17 per cent said council should’ve invested more to help ensure it became a regular fixture.
