COUNCIL is set to buy a clutch of privately owned land so it can start work on a huge housing development on the south side of town.
More than $350,000 was allocated to buy several parcels of land and get work started widening roads, drainage and wastewater infrastructure for the Arcadia development near Warwick Road and Bylong Road near South Tamworth.
Tamworth mayor Col Murray has previously said the 320 hectare patch of land could be home to more than 5000 people in years to come, with potential for more than 1600 homes.
At their most recent meeting, councillors voted in favour of spending $321,960 for property acquisitions and road widening works from the section 94 developer contributions fund and a further $35,038 from the wastewater reserve.
The costs associated with the purchase of property and/or easements to allow provision of infrastructure can be included in the relevant DSP or Contributions Plan and recovered through the charges levied.
