They include NIAS’ mountain bike squad commencing their season on Sunday, following trials a fortnight ago. A squad of 10 will meet in Tamworth.
The squad will have weekly training sessions and are encouraged to participate in their hometown twilight sessions mid-week.
Also on Sunday, the NIAS and Wests hockey squads will continue their regional training in Tamworth, having met in Armidale a fortnight ago.
The squad were also put through fitness testing, while NIAS hockey coaches Helen Willis and Greg Doolan will continue to set programs to improve fitness levels.
In addition to the regional training on Sunday, mid-week satellite training commences in Armidale and Tamworth.
The NIAS AFL program kicks off in Inverell on Sunday, with the NIAS and Inverell RSM AFL squads beginning their regional training.
For the first time NIAS will have a girls squad, which joins the tier-one boys squad for athletes who have been in the program the past three years, and a developmental squad for under-15 boys.
NIAS AFL head coach Alan Martin is looking forward to coming season, with all squads given the opportunity to play competitive AFL. A tour of Victoria is on the books for the tier-one boys.
The athletes have been selected from across the region. Opportunities still exist for any girls in the region looking for the chance to try AFL.
The region's top young golfers will meet at the Tamworth Golf Club on Saturday to commence their NIAS journey. The squad is made up of returning athletes, along with newcomers.
The NIAS and Tamworth Golf Club program consists of golfers from across the region. There are two girls in the program this year.
Another training weekend will be held in December, with an inter-academy golf camp set for Newcastle in January.
On Friday, NIAS will celebrate its 25-year anniversary at Armidale City Bowling Club. The MC for the day is former NIAS athlete Heidi Prowse, the 2017 ACT young Australian recipient.
