Jewry St will be closed to through traffic on October 22 from 6am to 5pm as part of Tamworth Regional Council’s major project to replace the 50-year-old sewer rising main which runs from Swan St to Darling St.
New large pipes will be laid from Chaoyang Friendship Park across Jewry St, near the Square Man Inn.
Council said the works were being carried out on a Sunday to minimise the impact on local residents.
And works will also start on a 1km stretch of the New England Highway between Nemingha and Tamworth.
Motorists are advised there will be temporary traffic changes in place to ensure the work zone is safe, however this may result traffic delays of up to 10 minutes.
The greatest impact on traffic is expected in the afternoon between 4pm and 7pm when vehicle numbers peak at about 500 an hour, council said.
Traffic flow will be reduced to one lane between Bourkes Bridge at Nemingha and the Caltex Depot.
Traffic controls will alternate the flow of vehicles in each direction.
Motorists are reminded to obey the traffic directions in place. Alternative routes are available to avoid lengthy delays.
The NSW Government is investing $650,000 to provide a stronger, longer lasting and safer road. Council is carrying out the work on behalf of Roads and Maritime Services.
