Talking Threads is the city’s new second hand clothing business and Emily Honess is the inspiration behind the project.

Vintage and retro lovers will be able to get their hands on clothing from the 90s and beyond at a special pop-up shop opening night at Cafe 2340 on Friday, September 29 from 6pm. 

The event is 90s themed with guests invited to dress up in their old-school fashion with drink specials, great music and competitions during the evening.

On the same night, local artist Tony La Chiusa will launch his latest art exhibition.

The pop-up store will remain at the cafe for two weeks.

“I’ve been working on the idea for over a year and am slowly gathering stock,” Miss Honess said.

“A lot of the stock is from out of the area and it’s nice, interesting and different for the town.

“I call it reclaimed apparel for mindful rebels.

“I’m all about encouraging people to not only express themselves through a personal style that is unique and creative with clothing, but buying second hand is more sustainable and encouraging people to avoid mass produced items.”

Miss Honess said one of the many upsides of second hand vintage clothing was the quality is much better than much of what is produced today.

“If you buy something, the style changes or want to upgrade it would be still in good enough condition to re-enter the fashion cycle and someone else can buy them,” she said. 

“An example of this is a friend gave me a little vintage vest to see if I wanted to sell it.

“It was (actually) mine.

“This is what fashion should be, when you’re done with it, it can renter the cycle.”

Miss Honess said she’ll gauge how successful the pop-up store is before taking the next step and committing to a permanent shopfront in town.
