The 2013-14 Country player of the year is excited to be leading a new look Tamworth side into familiar territory after Christmas, as they head to Grafton for a semi-final showdown against the Central Coast based Southern Spirit, and if successful a grand final the following day.
While the keeper batsmen has been to the finals before, several times, including two championships, the last in 2011, the long time skipper is pump[ed to be taking the next generation of Tamworth cricketers to the big stage.
“We are shaping up pretty well – We thought a few more might have pulled out because of when the finals are on but they all want to play,” Groth said.
While for the second year in a row the side will be missing big hitting opener Simon Norvill, they have gained his Old Boys opening partner Adam Lole in his place, while Redbacks skipper Brendan Rixon is also out to work commitments.
“I think Lole will be awesome, especially with the younger guys,” Groth said.
“He might not know yet but I am batting him in six to sure up the middle order.”
“Not having Brendan is also a loss – He always gets up for these big games but we have a strong side.”
“I think only three or four of us have played in the Country Cup finals before so it is exciting to take these young guys.”
Young batsmen Caleb McNeil has smashed his way into the side this year and will open with fellow finals debutante Brad Smith.
Michael Rixon will then provide plenty of experience at number three, with Troy Osborne and Lole also in that middle order alongside young gun Tom Fitzgerald.
Lachie Davidson will spearhead the pace attack and will be joined by fellow up and comers Tait Jordan and Jack Richards, while Osborne, Tom O’Neill and Brendan Reynolds round off a formidable attack.
“I am particularly excited about the young bowling attack,” Groth said.
The semifinal will be played at McKittrick Park on December 29.
