Coming out strong with No 10, Mark Booth, putting their first two on the board, the Slam Drunks kept the points coming in a sharp performance to lead by 11-0 twelve minutes into the game.
Monstars No 4, Ben Hudson, took first blood for his team and they began to get their defensive game together and toughed it out to bring the scores to 19-6 at half-time.
Both teams came out powerfully after the break with the scoreboard ticking over rapidly in the second half with neither team letting up.
Competition was fierce with both teams going hard at it, and obviously having plenty of fun on the court.
There were some showy moves, or at least attempted showy moves, and that brought plenty of cheering from supporters of both sides, regardless of singlet colour.
The Monstars landed a couple of big three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough at the end with the Slam Drunks powering home to record an impressive 32-20 victory.
Mark Booth was the top scorer for the Slam Drunks with eight points.
No. 6 Aaron Kraay and No. 4 Simon Walden made significant contributions making seven points each.
Not far behind were No 9 Mitchell Newman on six and No 11 Ben Meppem with four.
Monstars had two share the top spot, No 4 Ben Hudson and No 16 Hugh Trotter each with five points.
Also sharing a score of four each were No 11 Alex Wagg and No 9 James Wood.
No 15 Martin Heywood added to the score with his two pointer.
This is the first season for this incarnation of the Monstars and the gents are still finding their rhythm but with the improvement shown in the second half, it looks like it won’t be long before they start making an impact on the competition.
The Slam Drunks showed the experience that playing together for a few years brings.
They have had a couple of season titles and have also been runners-up more than once.
This current team looks like they will continue to be a force to be reckoned with and keep their name in high standing in the competition.
