The ATSB is investigating the incident involving a Jetstar Airways Airbus A320 near Narrabri Airport.
The incident occurred on September 22.
The ATSB said during cruise, the right engine failed and the flight crew diverted the aircraft to Brisbane Airport.
There were no injuries and the aircraft was not damaged.
As part of the investigation, the ATSB will interview the pilots and gather additional information.
A report is expected to be released next year.
