The introductory program, developed by Basketball Australia for children aged between five and nine, aims to enable participants of all abilities the opportunity to learn basketball in a structured, inclusive and safe environment while improving physical fitness, social skills and an understanding of the sport.
All of that while having fun.
The TBA is currently into the second of its programs for the year, coinciding the eight-week program with the school term.
“They can learn all their basic stuff here so they’ve got a head start when they go into the primary competition,” TBA administrator Peter McDonald said.
They offer the program of a Thursday afternoon, for Kindergarten and Year 1 students from 4.30pm and Year 2 students from 5.15pm.
Each session they run through some skills, covering a different skillset each week, and finish with a little game.
With the help of a grant from Basketball Australia, the TBA has been able to cut the cost of participating in the program, and are offering it for Term 2 at a special price of just $10.
“We’re just trying to get people interested,” McDonald said.
It seems to be working.
“So far we’ve got 26 registered in the Kindy/Year 1 and 11 in the Year 2s,” he said.
“This group (Kindy/Year 1s) has more than doubled, which is really good.”
When The Leader popped in, they were running through some dribbling drills under the watchful eye of Tamworth Basketball coaching director Matt Hobson and Thunderbolts’ US import Kyle Gupton.
“He’s (Gupton) been really good with them,” McDonald said.
There were quite a few high fives going around.
McDonald said it’s not too late to register and there are still five sessions to go.
