Leading Seaman Austin was the most junior navy officer to receive an Australia Day honour this year.
He was awarded the Conspicuous Service Medal for meritorious achievement in the performance of duty as Leading Seaman propulsion system marine technician on HMAS Arunta from March 2014 to March 2015.
He travelled home from Western Australia to lead the Barraba Anzac Day march.
As well as welcoming home one of their own,
Barraba commemorated the day with the traditional dawn service including a flyover of an Iroquois helicopter and a main march.
The town also marked 100 years since men from the district enlisted in the 33rd Battalion.
