Shortly after midnight, a Toyota utility was being driven by a 28-year-old man along Trevellyn Rd when the front side of the vehicle hit the guard rail and concrete gutter of the Slatey Gully Bridge.
The impact caused the vehicle to spin before it rolled a number of times.
The 28-year-old Upper Horten local was thrown from the vehicle, and was found nearby in long grass by passing motorists who stopped after seeing one headlight from the damaged vehicle on the side of the road.
Emergency services were alerted and paramedics transported the man, who suffered serious injuries, to Barraba hospital.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was deployed to the hospital and a medical crew assessed the man before he was flown to Tamworth hospital in a stable condition about 2.20am.
Following initial treatment, the man was subsequently flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle for specialist care.
Investigations are continuing.
