About 6.35am, the 66-year-old local man was riding his pushbike south on the New England Highway at Nemingha in a 60km/h work speed zone.
Police believe he tried to move across into the lane in front of a southbound Mitsubishi Triton, driven by a 59-year-old Tamworth man, but collided with the vehicle, about 600m north of the Nundle Rd turnoff.
The rider fell and suffered multiple suspected fractures. He was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before being taken to Tamworth hospital in a stable condition, where he remained late last night.
The driver wasn’t hurt in the collision, which forced the closure of the highway for more than two hours.
Crash investigators from Tamworth were sent to examine the scene and spoke with the driver and witnesses.
