Jason Matthew Picton is facing six offences including dangerous driving occasioning death, driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle and driving a vehicle on a road with unpaid road tax.
The 32-year-old was not required to enter pleas during the brief proceedings in Warialda Local Court on Wednesday morning, but magistrate Michael O’Brien has ordered investigators to compile a detailed brief of evidence into the case, which is expected to be taken over by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)
The alleged offences stem from a crash on May 16 on Old Barraba Rd at Bingara, when the unregistered Holden utility left the road and hit a tree.
A 54-year-old male passenger in the vehicle died at the scene, and Picton had to be freed from the wreckage and airlifted to hospital after suffering several fractures.
Crash investigators from Tamworth were deployed to the scene.
