After a season of hard work and hopefully lots of fun, the eight lucky grand final sides met at Minor League Park with the under 9s clash kicking off the day with a close contest.
North Tamworth Black built a handy lead thanks to tries to Anthony Rawiri, Liam Woolfe, Rhys Davis and Zac Lace, but Kootingal stormed home to give the Bears a scare.
It finished four tries all, with Mitchell Henderson (2), Mitch Worth and Noah Clark scoring Kooty’s.
But the Bears booted all of their goals and won it 24-20.
They had been minor premiers but found the Roosters a worthy opponent.
“We were the best two sides all year,” North coach Ray Lace said.
“We’ve always had close games.
“We had to forfeit one game because we had to field two sides.
“Otherwise we were undefeated.”
He said Tai Reiri, Rhys Davis, Anthony Rawiri and Liam Woolfe were the standouts for the Bears.
The under 10s decider wasn’t as close, as West Lions ran away with it against Collegians.
The Lions won 36-6 after Jack Davis, Tyrone Nean and Caleb Bergan all scored a double.
Brayden Reid scored Collegians’ only try just before halftime.
It was West’s second title in a row.
“We’ve got a good side,” coach Paul Davis said.
“We’re lucky to have a couple of really strong individuals in the team.
“The majority of them have been together for five years now and this is our second premiership.
“But this is the best we’ve played this year.
“Every player played their best.”
Collegians had another chance in the under 11s and this time they were
successful.
The dominant Collegians Blue side took on Dungowan and made it three wins in a row.
It was 6-all at halftime after Lyle Johnson and Nathan Watts traded tries but in the second half Collegians wore the Cowboys down.
Tom Sharman scored after halftime and Collegians went further ahead when Kendel McTavish and Nick Taggart crossed.
Dungowan scored last through Hamish Fauchon but Collegians ran out 22-12 winners.
“I said it was going to be tough and it was,” Collegians coach Aaron Mitchell said.
“That’s three in a row for us now.
“We’ve got a really good defensive side.”
The last premiership decided for the year was in the under 12s and North Tamworth ensured it went its way.
Prop Tom Hardcastle was almost unstoppable as he ran in five tries for the Bears in a 42-8 win over Werris Creek.
“Tom Hardcastle had a great game today,” North coach Mick Woods said.
“But they all played well.
“They’ve trained hard and played well all year.
“We came second. (Creek) were minor premiers but we really improved.”
