Tucky, a four-month-old blue merle koolie, has started his rounds at the aged care home, delighting everyone in his path.
Bupa Tamworth general manager Richard Williams said this was the first regular therapy pet they’d had at the home.
Mr Williams said Tucky was bringing plenty of happiness to the residents and staff members.
The four-legged team member started at the aged care home three weeks ago and his human mother, Rebecca Linich, is the care manager at Bupa.
He was welcomed with a morning tea and has settled into his new role.
“We’ve had visiting dogs before – and we’ve had chickens, birds and fish before,” Mr Williams said.
“He’s the only one who is here regularly and has become a big part of several residents’ days, which is really nice.”
Mr Williams said Tucky was a companion for the residents because he brought company but didn’t require conversation.
“They don’t really demand anything,” he said.
“We have a resident who will just nurse him for hours in the afternoon.
“It just brings companionship that is uncomplicated and full of love in both directions.”
Tucky’s role came from residents asking for a companion animal.
“Now that we’ve added Tucky as a member of the Bupa family, we would be hard-pressed not to have another animal,” Mr Williams said.
“He has opened the door to us for other animals.”
