TENNIS was a major hit in Tamworth on the weekend, not only with the newly started North West Tennis League (NWTL) but also the 14th annual West Tamworth Seniors Tournament at West Tamworth Tennis Club’s Belmore Park courts.

And West Tamworth’s Narelle Follington had the best of both tennis worlds.
She played in the West seniors tournament on Saturday, winning her ladies’ A3 Doubles and then switched over to the NWTL at Tamworth Tennis Club’s Treloar Park courts on Sunday.
She was part of a six-member West team also including Brooke Francis and four men – Mitch Power, Ciaran Lavers, Matt Felstead and Trent Hartin.
“It was a good weekend,” Power said yesterday.
“The seniors tournament is always good and went off well again.
“John (Ball) and his committee always put on a good show and look after everyone so well.”
The NWTL is a good concept too, Power added.
“It’s a great idea, although I didn’t play very well,” he said.
“It’s real good to get that sort of tennis around here.
“They are talking about building it up so the winner of our area might play the winners from other areas in a nationwide competition.”
He said the next round of the NWTL was timed for September in Gunnedah.
The NWTL includes six-player mixed teams from the two Tamworth tennis clubs, Gunnedah, Armidale, Inverell and Moree.
