In the Water Infrastructure Options Paper the Apsley Dam project is listed in the “Likely to be suitable for further consideration for possible assistance to accelerate feasibility studies, cost benefit analysis or design” category. Walcha Council will continue to assist the project through both our state and local members.
Following consultation with the community regarding a part day public holiday for the Walcha Races in February 2015, Council decided to apply for the part day public holiday from noon to 6pm. If this is unsuccessful Council will apply for a Local Event Day. Of the 62 business houses consulted 52 were in favour of the part day holiday with 10 against.
Walcha is very fortunate to have a large, vibrant and productive artistic community and a community that, in return, appreciates and supports the recognition that they have brought to our town. The Open Air Gallery is the perfect example of what can be achieved by the collaboration of our artists, the Arts committee and Council.
This partnership has now been further recognised by the State Government when the Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts Troy Grant announced Walcha being the recipient of a $20,000 grant which will purchase a Sculpture from the renowned Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. Well done to Council staff for the work put into completing the successful submission.
With the continued lack of rain Council will bring Level 2 water restrictions into force this week. Following the water issues we faced last summer I encourage everyone to make it your business to know exactly when and how you can use outside water and contact Council if you need any further information or have any concerns. The conditions of the Level 2 restriction is advertised on page 4 of the Walcha News.
The past month has been busy with meetings regarding Fit for the Future and the establishment of Pilot Joint Organisations and attendance at the LGNSW conference. This week general manager Jack O’Hara and I will attend a Rural Council Workshop which is being held to design a Rural Council Model.
As this is one of the options suggested for Walcha Council it is pleasing that we will have the opportunity to be involved and put forward the functions that we believe would work for Walcha Council.
The grading of our local roads has again been interrupted due to the extremely dry weather. This is very frustrating to not only the people living along these roads but also to Council as it delays the whole program.
Proposed work for the coming period includes the continuation of works on the Mansfield and Kings bridges, State Highway heavy patching and grading on Kangaroo Flat Road. Grading of the Hartford Road should now be completed.
Congratulations to all those involved in the Walcha Mountain Bike Festival and the Drought Buster Party over the last couple of weekends. Both had brilliant attendances and the change of venue for the bike ride proved an outstanding success.
The Open Gardens this weekend I know will be equally as successful and don’t forget to get your tickets for Opera at Langford on the 15 November. It’s all happening in Walcha, if we can just get 10 steady inches of rain through November we will be set for a very Happy Christmas!
