The first Education Week, back in 1954, had the theme “Lighting the Way to a Better World”, and organisers have chosen to adopt that same theme for the anniversary celebrations.
In Tamworth, the start of the week coincided with NAIDOC Week celebrations at Tamworth High, with students paying particular attention this year to the war service of indigenous Australians.
Activities at the school yesterday included a smoking ceremony by Len Waters, flag raising and performance by the Guumali Dancers, with the elder’s address by Stella Lamb.
The fun continues today with Aboriginal rock painting, boomerang art and even the crafting of loom bands.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said while so much had changed since the first Education Week 60 years ago, its theme still rang true today.
“Our local public schools remain committed to that philosophy and achieving the very best for our students in a variety of endeavours,” he said.
Mr Marshall will visit one of the region’s smallest schools, Bonshaw Public School, this week as part of celebrations, as well as hosting the annual Highlanders Leadership Lunch in Guyra today for the region’s small schools’ student leaders.
