The 41-year-old American was struck on Marius St near the intersection of Fitzroy St about 11.15am by a white utility towing a trailer.
Nearby workers from Beaurepaires rushed out to render aid to the woman and raised the alarm with emergency services.
Police closed one lane of traffic to allow ambulance paramedics to move in and help the woman.
The man believed to be behind the wheel of the utility was visibly distraught and comforted by bystanders but could only watch on as the emergency unfolded.
The woman suffered serious head and leg injuries and several paramedics worked to manoeuvre her onto a stretcher before she was rushed to Tamworth hospital in a serious condition.
After emergency scans, the woman’s condition deteriorated late yesterday before she was airlifted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in critical condition to Westmead hospital in Sydney.
The emergency drew onlookers from a number of nearby businesses as extra crews were called to the scene.
Crime scene investigators are now trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding the accident and have taken statements from a number of witnesses.
