The 66th year of the prestigious competition was greeted with a perfect sunny winter day at the Junior League Fields.
Even though there was no Opens division this year, 12 schools, 33 teams and 550 students arrived to compete across four divisions – from 13s to 16s.
Farrer had two sides in the 16s, their first XIII as Green and a good section of their First XV rugby side playing as Gold.
With only five sides entering the 16s this year Farrer Green beat Peel 26-0, before Farrer Gold dismissed O’Connor 16-0 to line up an all Farrer final.
Green easily accounted for the rugby boys winning 22-0.
Darcy Budd was the best on field in the final as well making some barnstorming runs down the field.
The side is no strangers to winning the competition, winning their respective age group for the last three years straight.
Coach Clint Gallagher was delighted with the result.
“It was a good day for us with both sides in the final,” Gallagher said.
“Marcus Hayne at five-eight had a great game but Darcy (Budd) played really well all day.”
Farrer also won the 15s A division with a decisive 28-0 victory over St Josephs Aberdeen.
Hunter Sports High travelled from Newcastle with two sides, and were favourites to win the 14s and 13s divisions.
They did take the 13s with a win over Farrer in the final 22-4, although Farrer took their revenge upsetting the Novocastrians 12-4 in the 14s final.
Muswellbrook High took two trophies home after winning the 13Bs and 15Bs finals over St Mary’s Gunnedah and Armidale’s O’Connor respectively.
McCarthy tok out the 14Bs final with a win over local rivals Peel in a close game 14-10, although the drama was kept for the final game of the day.
Tamworth High and O’Connor locked horns in the 15Bs final and after two fifteen minute halves of tight and hard footy they couldn’t be split after scoring one try each.
The game went into golden point and O’Connor pressured the Tamworth High line for five minutes before crashing over in the right corner after some handy passing along the backs.
President Peter Blom said it has always been a great carnival and this one was no different.
“It is a very special day for some kids and the only day of the year they play rugby league,” Blom said.
“It is great to see the kids playing footy with thier mates and outside having a good time.”
Alan Tongue might have been Farrer’s lucky charm as the former student and Canberra Raiders legend was special guest for the day.
