Held by the Armidale Volunteer Referral Service (AVRS) at the Armidale Dumaresq Council chambers last week, the ceremony coincided with what is National Volunteers Week.
Mayor Laurie Bishop was on hand to present the awards, the Volunteer of the Year going to Robert Hanson, who has being involved in the NSW Justice Association Northern Tablelands Support Group for 44 years.
The Young Volunteer of the Year was Sophie Sincock for her work with the Armidale District Netball Association and the council’s Sports Council; Volunteer Team of the Year was the Lifeline Northwest NSW Telephone Crisis supporters (Armidale); and the Volunteer Organisation of the Year was the NSW Justice Association Northern Tablelands Support Group.
“Volunteers in our community play an important role in providing essential services that otherwise would not be available,” Cr Bishop said.
“From coaching young swimmers to providing Justice of the Peace services to the community, volunteers impact hugely on the well-being and success of our community and I thank them for their outstanding service and contribution.”
The volunteers nominated for the local awards will also be put forward to participate in the NSW Volunteer of the Year Award 2014.
