A SEVEN-GOAL final quarter blitz from Tamworth Kangaroos full forward Dean Hoy kept his side’s five year Tamworth AFL hoodoo over local rivals Tamworth Swans in tact.
The 20.14 134 to 12.7 79 win also gave the Roos first points in the three-game Bill Holder Cup.
The Swans last local derby success came in 2009 when they won the TAFL flag, and they did hit the lead briefly in the second quarter but a Roos win was never in doubt with them going to half time 20 points up after a late flurry of goals.
Hoy ended up with eleven for the game after getting some silver service from the midfield in the final quarter.
Roos coach Brett Douglas was delighted with the result and full of praise for the midfield, despite a few fumbles.
“We won that through the middle,” Douglas said.
“We were creating plenty of avenues for attack and giving great ball to the front.”
At halftime the scores were 6.6 42 to 10.4 64 with the Swans once again applying a bit of pressure in the third quarter to trouble the Roos at times.
Swans coach Andrew Donoghue said that while there were some phases of good play, it was a constant battle.
“Every time we got a run on the board they would get two,” Donoghue said.
“They kept their heads up the whole game and kept battling which they always do.”
Narrabri’s young players stood up to hand the Eagles their first victory since re-joining the competition as they beat Gunnedah at home.
After bolting out of the blocks to take a five-goal lead in the first quarter, the Eagles took their foot off the accelerator and let the Bulldogs back in.
By the end of the third quarter the lead was cut back to only seven points before the Eagles flew home to win 14.13 97 to 10.13 73.
Eagles coach Todd Dunn said it was great to see the young guys in the team stand up during the tight periods of the match.
“It was a very consistent effort across the park and a good game of footy,” Dunn said.
Wingers Dylan Segundo and Zac Laureston had good games, bit it was Mark Barrow who was best on field.
“He was great in the middle and was getting some good ball forward,” Dunn said.
Guilio Heimoana was also a handful in the forward line kicking goals.
In Inverell the New England Nomads came out on top in their grand final replay against the Inverell Saints at Varley Oval, the Nomads kicking 14.12 96 to the Saints’ 5.8 38.
Grand final hero Dave Richards was once again a thorn in the Saints side kicking four goals, while Matt Folpp kicked three for the visitors who were best served by Richards, Weston Whitby, Tom Granleese and captain-coach Zac Economou.
