Only formed at the end of last year, Oxley Diggers men struggled in their opening KO games, losing 34-18 to Narrabri and then 46-6 to Wests, but the ladies’ league tag remained unbeaten to score a deserving 10-point win over North Tamworth in the final.
The Diggers women led 4-nil early after a Tarneice Berry try.
Jasmine Mihell then scored for the Bears to level up at 4-all at halftime .
Second-half tries to Abby Schmiedel and Tiahna Paulson sealed the win, with Aimee Diebold converting the final try.
Diggers coach Natasha Allan was delighted with the effort and result.
“It was a great win for us,” Allan said.
“It’s the club’s first win.
“The girls are gelling pretty well and they are picking up the league concept well. They’ve all come from an Oztag background.”
Oztag is played on a much smaller ground with eight-a-side, Allan said.
“We play on a much bigger ground and 11-a-side.
“The girls were on the job today. They all dug in after winning our three games yesterday.”
