TAMWORTH trainer Sue Grills will support today’s local race meeting with a truckload of six gallopers, but one of interest could be up-and-coming filly, Tennavous.
The three-year-old is owned by a syndicate of 10 men – many who were old schoolmates back in the late 1980s.
Part-owner and former saddlebroncer Adam Newman is one of those “ten of us” who has a special connection with the daughter of Fubu.
“I broke a few horses in for a fellow, and she was among them,” Newman said.
“He had a fair few horses in work, and said that he couldn’t keep them all, and didn’t know what he’d do with her – maybe lease her.
“When I broke her in, I noticed she had a few good traits, and she was an athletic little filly, so I asked if he’d be interested in selling her. And it’s rolled on from there.
“Sue’s done a great job with her. She reckons the filly has the best yet to come.”
From four starts to date, Tennovous can boast a win and three placings, and will be looking to lift that win tally even further in today’s 1200m class one handicap.
And she’ll be ridden by apprentice Sophie Young who has ridden her in all starts to date.
Accompanying Tennovous to the track will be stablemates Keep It Danish (1400m Benchmark 70), Lucky Sky (1200m maiden), Coventry (1200m class one handicap), Manner Ridge (1000m Benchmark 50) and Tabliope in the 1400m class two plate.
Trainer Sue Grills rates five-year-old mare Keep It Danish (Raymond Spokes), a winner of the 1400m Glen Innes Cup back in January, “a good each way chance”.
“She’ll probably head to the Tamworth Cup prelude, something like that,” she said.
Another galloper that could feature is Coventry (Adam Sewell), who will be second up from a spell today.
“I’ve only had him this prep. He had a fairly good spell after his last preparation when he got crook,” she said.
“He ran a nice race (when resumed with two lengths second over 1000m in BM 55) at Quirindi the other day.
“But he’s up in distance, has a big weight (62kg) and wide barrier (9), so might have the job ahead of him.”
