The February 23 Longyard Junior Golf Development Day is a three-person ambrose event being run by the Longyard Junior Golf Steering Committee to fund the regular Sunday coaching sessions for the young players.
Longyard junior secretary Allen Daley said all proceeds from the golf day go to fund the junior golf program.
“At the moment we do have sponsors coming on board,” Daley said.
“We do have good local support.”
Daley said the Longyard Junior Golf Steering Committee kicked off last February with “five members”.
“We now have more than 50,” he said.
Longyard Golf Club professional Steve Myers, who helps out with the coaching at the regular Sunday morning sessions, said it had grown to 56.
He said children aged between five and 12 were welcome to attend when the juniors sessions restart on Sunday, February 2 (10am).
The one-one hour sessions enable the juniors to play as many as four holes, he said.
Myers is also coaching some other juniors on Monday afternoons.
He said the fact parents only have to pay a $50 membership fee entitles the juniors to attend all the Sunday morning sessions without any extra costs.
Daley said the February 23 Longyard Junior Development Golf Day would be the only fundraiser held by the steering committee.
It enables them to run the junior coaching sessions without any extra costs to parents.
He said the sharp rise in member numbers (5 to 56) “augurs well for junior golf, as a healthy sport for the younger generation, and the future of the general golfing community especially at Longyard Golf”.
Bookings for the February 23 ambrose are now open. It has a 9.30am shotgun start.
