Garden puts food on table
RESIDENTS of the Peel River Gardens retirement village are helping to put food on the table through a communal garden inside the village grounds.
Tomatoes, carrots, sugarcane and cucumbers have been planted in the garden, which was built by Landcare member John Tucker and Older Men’s Network member Jim Finucane this week.
The communal garden, one of about 10 across Tamworth, will provide the 35 residents with supplies for the village kitchen. It could also become a stop on a communal garden tour, along with the Coledale community garden in Tingira St, the Lifeline garden, the Montessori communal garden and another in the grounds of Calrossy’s William Cowper campus.
Peel River Gardens residents will be involved in the garden’s upkeep.
“Some of them are keen gardeners. You can tell because they’re the ones with pots out the front,” village manager Christina Shafik said.
