Since 1995 the services have operated from the coach terminal at the front of the Tamworth Visitor Information Centre. Tamworth Regional Council business and events director John Sommerlad said the change aims to give passengers greater comfort and security.
“Moving the Greyhound Australia service to operate from the City Gate Roadhouse makes good sense,” Mr Sommerlad said. “Passengers will be comfortable and secure with the added convenience of the services that a 24-hour service station offers.”
Mr Sommerlad said it was the logical place for the services to stop and helped to protect the visitor information centre.
“This move enables us to move forward to protect the community asset we have there,” he said.
“We don’t want it to be vandalised and used for the wrong purposes.”
One young, female past passenger said thought it was a good idea because there was always someone around and somewhere passengers could go into if they had to wait for their lift.
Greyhound Australia’s Brisbane to Sydney service stops at Tamworth at 2.05am, while the Sydney to Brisbane service stops at Tamworth at 12.45am.
Tamworth Regional Council began discussions with Greyhound Australia several months ago about the possible relocation of its Tamworth stop after some vandalism incidents earlier this year at the Tamworth Visitor Information Centre coach terminal.
A Greyhound Australia spokesperson said they had spoken to the Tamworth City Gate manager and that stopping here would provide a safe area as it was one of the few places open at the times their services goes through the city.
“Greyhound Australia’s Sydney-bound service already goes to this new stop and this is currently also a freight stop, so making the northbound service also stop here provides consistency for our regular passengers,” they said.
New England Coaches - which operates a Tamworth to Port Macquarie and Tamworth to Brisbane service each Monday, Wednesday and Friday - will continue to pick up and drop off passengers at the Tamworth Visitor Information Centre.
From Monday, July 22 the coach terminal at the visitor information centre will open daily from 9am to 5pm.
