Nicknamed “Barwon80”, the specialist vehicle is one of 25 to be delivered to police commands across the state by July this year, announced last month as part of a NSW government election commitment.
Featuring location-specific radios, digital message boards and an interview room, the high-tech vehicles assist police by providing a high-visibility police presence in crime hotspots or high-traffic areas.
Commander Jenny Hayes said the van provided officers with an effective and modern platform to work out of while out and about in the community.
“Starting from today, Barwon80 will be deployed regularly as part of high-
visibility policing operations targeting crime hot spots, random breath testing and as an on-site command post for major events and incidents,” Commander Hayes said.
Barwon Nationals MP Kevin Humphries also welcomed the new vehicle to Barwon, saying the vehicles were effectively a mobile police station.
“Officers can perform almost all the tasks they would perform at a station in the vehicle, including conducting searches, interviews and executing warrants,” Mr Humphries said.
Forty-seven of the vehicles are already in operation across NSW.
