New Zealand’s Laurel Judd was announced the winner of the Supreme Award at Saturday night’s awards.
It was not one but two of her designs that earned her the accolade, with the judges agonising over their decision until they were informed the creations came from the same designer.
Her designs included a playful knitted outfit and a felted racewear outfit, complete with hat.
The Australian Wool Fashion Awards managing director Liz Foster said Ms Judd had paid attention to detail with the outfits and each were “beautifully done”.
Ms Judd took home a diamond jewellery set from Tenterfield’s Margot Edwina Rees Antiques for her efforts.
Mrs Foster said the awards night was “the most wonderful night”, with about 200 guests attending.
“There were 100 entrants, which was a little less than we’ve had before, but the quality was far superior to anything we’ve had before,” Mrs Foster said.
She said the judges – So You Think You Can Dance America judge Bonnie Lythgoe, former Ready Steady Cook host and current Celebrity Apprentice contestant Peter Everett, TV personality Faye De Lanty, and fashion and lifestyle blogger Adrian Erdedi – were impressed by the professionalism of the event and the designs.
Seven school students also took out sought-after scholarships at the awards.
PLC Pymble student Jessica McClatchy and All Saints Anglican School students Bianca Scott and Sarah Scott won drawing scholarships to the Whitehouse Institute of Design.
Academy of Design scholarships were awarded to Nichola Elliot at New England Girls’ School and Armidale High School students Miriam Lott and Edith Rose.
Laura Davis, a student at All Saints Anglican School in Merrimac, Queensland, took out a half-fee three-year degree scholarship to Raffles College of Design.
There were 10 other categories in the awards, including secondary school, young designer, knitwear, workwear, racewear, recycled, wearable art, evening wear and bridal wear.
