Oxley highway patrol officers were conducting random breath tests of drivers travelling along Manilla Rd about 5.30pm and stopped a Hyundai Excel.
The 25-year-old driver blew a negative result, but police searched the vehicle and found a .22 rifle.
The man was later charged at Tamworth Police Station with possessing an unregistered and unauthorised firearm and was released on conditional bail.
He will face Gunnedah Local Court on February 5.
