This has prompted Tamworth man Boon Cotter to introduce a series of free workshops in
Tamworth, aimed at giving guidance to help aspiring developers on their way.
The first workshop will be held next Saturday and will cover such topics as career pathways, education opportunities and specialising for an industry role.
By the second workshop next month, Mr Cotter hopes attendees will begin making their own games.
Similar workshops have already proved a success in Sydney.
Mr Cotter – who has worked in the industry for about 10 years – said game design was suitable for anyone of any age or any discipline, with everyone from writers to mathematicians required to produce a game.
But there was one prerequisite, he said – you needed to be passionate about games.
There are employment opportunities with game companies, but it’s also a career that can be made independently.
“That’s one of the great things about it; it’s one of the last remaining industries where you can self-publish and make yourself a success,” Mr Cotter said.
The workshops, presented by Mr Cotter’s community website game-design.org, will initially be held once a month.
Mr Cotter said there would also be opportunities for tutoring.
The first workshop will be held Saturday December 15 at Joblink Plus, 11 Byrnes Ave, between 10am and 2pm.
