Announced late last Friday, GrainCorp cited a company restructure and the need to be closer to more clients as the main reasons for relocation.
But the company's reasoning has done little to soothe Tamworth and district customers, who have expressed anger and disappointment over the move.
One of Australia's leading agri-food businesses, Graincorp's restructure has come after a tough year of drought, ruined crops and high Australian dollar.
Sydney-based storage and handling general manager Kevin Lloyd said the restructure was about getting closer to where our customers were and building stronger business relationships.
The move will see the expansion of its Narrabri office, the closure of Tamworth and the creation of a new office in Horsham, Victoria.
The new regions will join to make three overall divisions merging northern NSW with south-western Queensland.
In a radio news report, Mr Lloyd also signalled further closures of local silos and receiving points, but said no final decision had been made.
A further four jobs could also be lost in the NSW restructure.
Grain grower Bede Burke said he was disappointed when he heard the news on the radio.
"I think put simply it's a cost cutting exercise, after a very tough year," he said.
"It's one thing to say they'removing to be closer to more of their customers, but there's still plenty of people that think they should have a base in a major regional city. That's not Narrabri."
