Emergency services were called to the intersection of Duri and Gunnedah Rd today at 3pm.
About 2.30pm police were called to a home on Barton Lane, Tamworth where they spoke with a woman.
As a result of a radio message another police vehicle in the area pulled over a man who was travelling in a Honda Civic on Macquarie Street.
The man was submitted to a breath test that provided a negative result and he left the scene.
Shortly before 3pm (Wednesday 30 May 2012), the Honda Civic was travelling east on Bridge Street when it was involved in a head-on crash with a Ford one-tonne ute travelling in the opposite direction.
The male driver of the civic suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The 22-year-old driver of the Ford was not injured.
A crime scene has been established while police conduct their inquiries.
A Critical Incident Investigation Team has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
