Baylen Shane Grassy Pendergast died in a Sydney hospital on November 30, 2013, two days after he was found unconscious in a Gosse Street, Westdale home.
On Tuesday, an inquest, scheduled for three weeks, will begin in Tamworth Coroner’s Court.
Deputy State Coroner Derek Lee will examine what happened in the hours leading up to when the 22-month-old was found, and the medical response.
Emergency services rushed to the home about 9.30pm on November 28, 2013, after reports a baby was unconscious.
Paramedics immediately took over CPR from a neighbour. Baylen was flown to Randwick Children’s Hospital in Sydney.
The family were by his side when his life support was turned off about 10.15pm, two days later. He died shortly after.
In January, 2014, Oxley detectives made a public appeal for information into the toddler’s death, which has been under investigation until it was referred to the coroner.
Magistrate Lee oversaw a directions hearing in March, last year, and will hear evidence from family members, investigating police as well as a number of medical staff who saw or treated the young boy.
Several specialist doctors are also expected to give evidence this week, before the inquest is adjourned to Sydney later in the month for further expert evidence.
