Leading the way for Tamworth BMX Club at the marquee event in Bunbury, WA will be Jack Davis and defending Aussie champion Daniel Morris.
Ranked fourth in the world, Davis’ latest results include a third place in the 16 boys final during round one of the 2018 National Series at Penrith on March 17.
Coming up against some fierce competition in Bunbury, Davis’ experience will be key to making sure he comes out with a good result.
“I’m really keen and I’ve been working hard in my training in the build-up to it”, Davis said.
When asked about his rivals, Davis was very eager to take on his fellow riders and see what happens on the day.
“Oliver Moran (Manning Valley BMX Club), Corey Taylor (Woorree Park BMX Club) and Dylan Rush, the local, will be ones the watch out for, that’s for sure”.
Racing in the 17-24 men’s class at nationals, Morris is excited to get back out on the track and is ready for the challenge.
That excited that his father, girlfriend and himself made the long drive from Tamworth to Bunbury.
“I’m feeling really good at the moment especially while coming off a shoulder reconstruction,” Morris said.
“I raced in WA back in 2009 during the Australian titles and got to the quarter finals which meant I was good enough to qualify for worlds.”
Being the favourite of a national championship class is always a big confident booster but there are still a couple of unknowns he’s not sure about.
“I’m quietly confident that I should do okay,” Morris said.
“There are a few unknowns from WA who I don’t really see and a couple of riders who I haven’t raced since last year’s nationals so I’m not 100 per cent sure how I‘ll go but I should be okay.”
The action at the 2018 BMX Australia National Championships began on Monday with the first of two practice days.
Wednesday sees the UCI Oceania Continental Championships take place while Thursday and Friday will feature cruiser classes, age group and challenge events.
Saturday will be the big-ticket item as the championship events, with elite classes, hit top gear.
